Glad School Starts Tomorrow

I always lived at home while going to college, but this weekend feels a bit like my image of starting college; you arrive in the new town, you party really hard the first weekend, and then it is a slog in school. Part one and two are correct, I’m hoping part 3 does not come true.

Party day number two.  Last evening we headed off to Chimaltenango (about 45 km away) for Claudia (Daniel’s sister) and Alejandro’s (Daniel’s other sister Arjglia’s son) birthday celebration. Daniel is my niece Christina’s fiance.

What an event! In the afternoon, we stopped in the market and picked out a pinata. Then, near Chimaltenango, we did a little shopping for a gift, picked up Argelia’s kids Fernando, Monica and Alejandro and we (Christina, Mario (Daniel’s Dad), the kids, Jim and I all continued on to Claudia’s house 18 speed bumps or tumulos away (yes we counted them). Christina drives a little stick shift 4-door Mazda-2.

Oh, and after picking everyone up we then stopped to get a cake and pick up pizza too! Martin and Argelia came on Martin’s little scooter, a very popular form of transportation in Guatemala and the only vehicle Martin and Argelia own. Cramming folks into a car is also not uncommon if you happen to own one.

This was one tough pinata. Alejandro gives it a bunch of wacks.

The party was a ton of fun and everyone got into the pinata act.
